Bookcase lighting: picture lights, LED strips or both.

How to light built-in bookcases: picture lights, vertical and horizontal LED strips, colour temperature, dimming and planning the wiring before the shelves are built.

Good lighting turns a bookcase from storage into the warmest feature in a room. The two main approaches are picture lights and LED strips.

01Picture lights

Small fixtures mounted above each section, angled down.

Best for: traditional rooms, painted bookcases, prewar apartments. Plan for: a power feed to each light, hidden in the cabinet frame.

02LED strips

Thin strips hidden in grooves on the front or sides of each shelf, or vertically inside the uprights.

Best for: modern bookcases, walnut and oak, even light across every shelf. Plan for: an aluminium channel with a diffuser so you see light, not dots, and a driver hidden in a base cabinet.

03Colour temperature

Use warm white, 2700K to 3000K, for living rooms and libraries. Look for a high colour rendering index (CRI 90 or more) so book spines and wood look true.

04Dimming and switching

Put shelf lighting on a dimmer or a smart switch. Separate circuits for shelves and picture lights let you set the mood.

05Plan before you build

Wiring goes inside the cabinets during fabrication. Decide on lighting at the design stage, not after installation.
